Gopher trio named to USA Under-22 Select Team

Gophers Patti Marshall, Grace Zumwinkle and Taylor Heise are among the athletes named to the U.S. Under-22 Women’s Select Team that will represent the U.S. in the upcoming three-game series against Canada occurring this week at the Markin MacPhail Center in Calgary, Alberta. USA Hockey announced its 22-player roster following the 2018 USA Hockey Women’s National Festival in Lake Placid, New York.

Marshall returns to the line-up  after also representing the U.S. in the Under-22 Series against Canada in 2016. She is a five-time USA Hockey Women’s National Festival invitee (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018) who also represented the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team in three series against Canada in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Zumwinkle makes her under-22 team debut after attending her third USA Hockey Women’s National Festival (2015, 2016, 2018). She is a two-time member of the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team at the Under-18 Series against Canada (2015, 2016). Zumwinkle is also a two-time IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship gold medalist.

Heise also makes her Under-22 Team debut after representing the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team in three-consecutive series against Canada in 2015, 2016, and 2017. She is one of three players that won gold at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship named to the Under-22 Team as well.

Ten different states are represented on the 22-player roster, with Minnesota leading the way with eight players, including Marshall, Zumwinkle and Heise. The full roster includes 13 forwards, seven defensemen, and two goaltenders.

Along with three Gophers on the ice for Team USA, associate head coach Joel Johnson is serving as head coach of the Under-22 Team. Most recently, Johnson served as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team for four seasons from 2014-15 to 2017-18. Johnson led the U.S. to four consecutive gold medals at the 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championships. He also led the club at four Under-18 Series against Canada.

The Under-22 Series is scheduled for Thursday through Sunday with the team set to play games on Thursday (8 p.m.), Friday (8 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.). All games will be streamed live at HockeyTV.com.
