Infantry band to play at Big Island Bar-B-Que

The Minnesota National Guard and country music intersect Saturday at the Big Island Bar-B-Que as an infantry band is set to play.

Cover Fire Country Band, a musical support team of the 34th Infantry Division Band, has five musicians.

The mission of the band is to provide music through the spectrum of military operations and to instill in the armed forces the will to fight and win, foster the support of citizens and promote national interests at home and abroad, according to a press release.

According to the Minnesota National Guard, the band was officially organized on April 30, 1900. The 34th Infantry Division Band is credited with participation in World War I, Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, Rome-Arno, North Apennines, Po Valley and Operation Iraqi Freedom and Iraqi Sovereignty. They have been awarded the French Croix de Guerre (World War II), the Meritorious Unit Citation (Iraq) and the Colonel George S. Howard Citation for Musical Excellence.

The 34th Infantry Division Band maintains an active performance schedule, including free public performances throughout the state, the press release stated. The band’s home is Rosemount.

Cover Fire will play from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Admission is free.
