5 things to do this weekend

1. Community cleanup

Volunteers are needed for a community cleanup sponsored by the United Way of Freeborn County on Saturday.

Volunteers are asked to meet at 3 p.m. in the municipal parking lot behind the Vitality Center and will participate in a garbage pickup of litter from roadsides and shorelines.

Garbage bags and nitrile gloves will be provided, and people are reminded to dress in long pants with closed-toe shoes.

Free T-shirts will be given to those who participate.

 

2. Deer banquet

The 28th annual banquet for the Southern Gateway Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association will take place Saturday at American Legion Post 56 in Albert Lea.

The event, which begins with social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m., is open to members only and their guests, though memberships are available at the door.

Cost is $60 for an adult membership and the meal, $25 for a guest and $20 for youth membership and meal.

If people register ahead of time they can have the choice between a chicken or pork chop dinner; otherwise, chicken will be the only option available for people who register at the door.

In addition to the dinner, there will be raffles, drawings and a silent auction. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased at the banquet.

3. Live music

Interested in hearing some live music? Look no further than Bend in the Road in Manchester, where Whey Jennings and The Unwanted will perform Saturday.

The performance begins at 7 p.m. and costs $10 to attend.

The grandfather of Whey Jennings is the legendary Waylon Jennings, and his grandmother is Jessi Colter. Both had major success in the major music charts for decades, according to event organizers.

Whey Jennings continues the love for music that runs in the family.

 

4. Fall Czech Festival

Experience a taste of Czech culture with the Glenville Fall Czech Festival taking place Saturday and Sunday at Bohemian Brick Hall. There will be music and entertainment with polka musician Mollie B and the Jim Busta Band, dancing, children’s activities, a silent auction, food and beverages. Mollie B will perform with the band from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, at a 10:30 a.m. church service on Sunday and again from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Festival grounds open at noon Saturday. 

Proceeds from the event will go toward the restoration and care of Bohemian Brick Hall, as well as donations made throughout the year by Western Fraternal Life Association Lodge No. 44.

 

5. God’s Comic

Nationally known Christian comedian Brad Stine will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Albert Lea. The performance is expected to prove that comedy can be clean and intelligent as well as hilarious.

Tickets are $10 and are available online, at the church ahead of time and at the door.
