The Lake Mills football team recorded its first win of the season Friday night when it traveled to North Union.
The Bulldogs fought through a late comeback by the Warriors and pulled ahead in the fourth quarter to come out on top, 20-12.
The first score of the game came on a six-yard run from junior Logan Prescott, and after a successful PAT by senior Cael Boehmer, the Bulldogs led 7-0. It wouldn’t take long for the Warriors to get a score of their own, however, as they completed a 25-yard pass to bring the score within one after an unsuccessful two-point conversion.
Both defenses came up big in the second quarter, allowing zero points on either side, sending Lake Mills to halftime with a one-point advantage.
North Union capitalized on another long pass in the third quarter, this time taking the ball into the endzone on a 20-yard completion, putting Lake Mills in its first deficit of the game, 12-6.
Still trailing by six in the fourth quarter, Boehmer intercepted a Warriors pass and took it nine yards for the defensive score. The PAT was blocked by the Warriors, but the Bulldogs still took a one-point lead.
Boehmer would put all thoughts of a potential Warriors comeback aside when he rushed for his second touchdown of the game on a 32-yard scamper. He also converted on the PAT to put the game away for the Bulldogs.
As a team, Lake Mills held the North Union rushing offense to just 16 yards and 121 yards of total offense.
“Our rush defense was outstanding,” said head coach Bill Byrnes. “Offensively, we were able to get our quarterback involved, getting to the edge. Cael (Boehmer) kept the ball at crucial times for big gains and went for big yards.
“We left some points out there again this week, but I promise the Lake Mills football fans we are continually looking for ways to improve and be more efficient on offense.”
The Bulldogs climb to 1-3 on the season and will host Sumner-Fredricksburg Friday for homecoming.
