ST. PAUL — Hundreds of law enforcement officers gathered at Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel in St. Paul to honor the life of Joe Parise, the second Minnesota corrections officer to die in the line of duty in just two months.
The 37-year-old Parise died of a medical emergency last week after rushing to the aid of a fellow officer who was being attacked by an inmate at the Oak Park Heights maximum-security prison. Parise collapsed shortly after returning to his post and later died at Regions Hospital.
He will be buried at Fairview Cemetery in Stillwater following Tuesday morning’s funeral.
Parise’s death and that of Joseph Gomm in July has corrections staff again calling for increased staffing and security inside Minnesota’s prisons. Officer Gomm was killed by an inmate at the Stillwater prison.
