Letter: Negative ads are frustrating

I have recently been made aware of some attack mailers that were sent to our area by outside political groups attacking my opponent. (Always look at the fine print on any political advertising, and that will tell you who it’s from.) This type of harsh, negative political messaging makes me very angry. It has always been my goal to stay positive and speak to the issues, which is how I handle my own campaign. I do not agree with or condone harsh, negative political messaging like this.
I was also made aware that there are some robo text messages being sent to people by an outside group on my behalf. This unwanted messaging must be very frustrating to people. I look at it as an invasion of privacy. Again, it is not something I agree with or condone.
I would like to apologize publicly to Terry for these attack ads from outside groups, and to my constituents who must bear the brunt of this negative political campaigning. Unfortunately, campaign finance laws make it illegal for me to, for any reason, contact outside groups who are campaigning on my behalf — even to let them know that I do not want or agree with these types of advertising. This is very frustrating to me.
People deserve to hear the truth about candidates and their stances on issues — not to be bombarded with negative advertising. Let’s keep political campaign advertising clean and positive.
