Monte Johnson, 1945-2018

Memorial services for Monte K. Johnson, 73, formerly of Albert Lea will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. The Rev. Kent Otterman will officiate. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by local veterans organizations. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Monday. Monte died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, at The Gardens at Cannon Falls.

Monte Keith Johnson was born March 2, 1945, in Albert Lea, the son of John and Nora (Spangelo) Johnson. He grew up in Albert Lea, graduating from Albert Lea High School.

He went on to attend Mankato State, earning a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics. Monte was a math teacher and hockey coach at Shattuck School in Faribault.

After teaching, Monte proudly served in the U.S. Army — stationed in Yuma, Arizona, from 1969 to 1971 — earning a good conduct medal and a sharpshooter badge.

He enjoyed hockey and was very involved with the American Legion in Richfield.

Monte is survived by his sons Karl (Jennifer) Johnson and Ole Johnson; two grandsons; brother, Gary (Jackie) Johnson; aunts Elinor Stotts and Irene Johnson; one niece and one nephew.

Monte was preceded in death by his parents John and Nora.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the charity of the donor’s choice.
