75 years ago: 1943

• The Albert Lea Tigers football team defeated Mankato 6-0. With the victory, the Tigers went into a first-place tie with Austin. Lloyd Ball’s 17-yard run in the first quarter proved to be the game winner for the Tigers.

• The Chauffers led the Wilson Bowling league at the Town Club Alleys with a 7-3 record. Ed Kline had the individual high series with a 599.

• Led by Ross Peterson, who scored one of three touchdowns, Freeborn defeated Winnebago 19-0 in high school football.

 

50 years ago: 1968

• After three games, Bill “Boom Boom” Brown had rushed for 211 yards for the Minnesota Vikings and led the NFL in scoring with six touchdowns.

• The Ellendale football team picked up a 56-0 non-conference win over the Waseca Aggies. David Richards led the Raiders with four touchdowns, four extra points and was credited with a safety.

• Freeborn slipped past Kiester 7-0 to earn its third Border League victory of the season. Bob Christopherson’s 77-yard run in the first quarter was the lone score of the game.

• The Albert Lea Tigers football team celebrated Homecoming with a 44-0 win over Mankato. Jay Gustafson threw four touchdown passes, including two to Randy Bottelson and Larry Brandt.

 

10 years ago: 2008

• Olympic gold medal wrestler Ben Peterson was preparing for a free wrestling clinic for kindergarten through 12th-grade wrestlers at Albert Lea High School.

• The Albert Lea boys’ soccer team closed out its regular season with a 9-1 win over Kasson-Mantorville. Adam Clark scored three times and added three assists to lead the Tigers.

• Alden-Conger defeated Glenville-Emmons to take third place in the LeRoy-Ostrander volleyball tournament. Krista Mathiason had seven ace serves, 20 digs and 27 kills in the tournament to lead the Knights.

 

This year

• Former NRHEG and Minnesota Gophers basketball star Carlie Wagner will make her Spanish League debut for the Quesos El Pastor Zamarat basketball team Oct. 13 when they tip off against Araski. The team is based out of Zamora, Spain.
