Alton Oakland, 1928-2018

Alton “Tony” Oakland, 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018, at Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, 2210 E Main St. in Albert Lea. The Rev. Kent Otterman will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Bricelyn Lutheran Cemetery.

Alton E. Oakland was born Aug. 4, 1928, to parents Elmer and Alma (Moen) Oakland in Freeborn County. He graduated from Freeborn High School in 1947.

Alton married Alice Allen in Albert Lea. The couple had six children before Alice passed away.

On Nov. 20, 1972, Alton married Beverly Schow at The Little Brown Church. They made their home together in Albert Lea.

For 18 years, Alton was a milkman for Polly Meadows Dairy out of Rochester. After that, he worked for Queen Products for 15 years and was a janitor at the Moose Club until retirement.

Alton was a member of the Moose Club with Bev for 35 years. In his free time, he enjoyed cooking, gardening, camping and spending time with his family.

The couple enjoyed vacationing in their mobile home to Rockaway Beach, Missouri, for 19 years. His great laugh and wonderful sense of humor will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Oakland; children Vicki Nelson of Denver, Karen (Mark) Weidner of Allendale, New Jersey, Cheryl Horning of Cheshire, Connecticut, Maryjo (B.A.) Classen of Tubac, Arizona, Larry (Mary) Schroader of Albert Lea, Ronald (Kim) Schrader of Glenville, Kari Ann Roisen of Albert Lea and Del (Cindy) Schroader of Albert Lea; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Stillings; sisters-in-law Evelyn Spielman, Lucille Oakland and Margaret Schow; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Alma Oakland; first wife, Alice Oakland; children Brenda Oakland, Alton Jr. and Daryl Schrader; siblings LeMoyne Oakland, Vernon Oakland and Eunice (Lawrence “Bud”) Wilhelm; sisters-in-law Eileen Farmer and Kathy Berry; and brothers-in-law Bob Stillings, Bob Allen, Harlin Schow, Merlin Schow and Ray Spielman.
