International Survivors of Suicide Loss event planned in Albert Lea

Many in the community suffer greatly from the ache of the loss of a loved one to suicide, according to a press release.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention offers annual events throughout the world. Bonnerup Funeral Service will host a survivors event from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 17 at Bonnerup Funeral Service, 2210 E. Main St. in Albert Lea.
People who have attended the event in the past found connection to others and comfort by being in the company of those who understand what it means to lose someone to suicide, the release states.
The afternoon provides a safe and supportive space of being in the same room with other survivors. Frequently, those who have experienced a loss to suicide feel there is something wrong with them. By sharing their experiences, they may find their thoughts and feelings are quite normal. It is possible to find hope, the release said.
The event is an opportunity to learn and find resources. It enables participants the opportunity to help others as well as themselves. Those with recent losses, as well as those who experienced loss many years ago, support each other in recognizing that although the pain and grief remain, you can make it through and have a meaningful life.
For many loss survivors, attending a survivor day event is an opportunity to discover they are not alone in their experience of losing someone they know and love to suicide. Participants are encouraged to bring a picture of their loved one if they wish. For those who are unable to attend a survivor day event in person, AFSP hosts a survivor day program online at survivorday.org.
There is no charge for the local International Survivors of Suicide Loss event.
