Four members of the Albert Lea wrestling team finished in the top eight of their respective weight classes this past weekend at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament in Rochester.
Seniors Zach Glazier and Nic Cantu, sophomore Caleb Talamantes and eighth-grader Cole Glazier each took home some hardware from one of the most prestigious tournaments in Minnesota.
Zach Glazier cruised through the competition to the finals, earning two pinfall victories and two technical fall victories on his way to what could potentially be a preview of the 182-pound state final match. Owatonna senior and No. 1-ranked Cade King awaited Glazier in the finals, where Glazier just edged out King in a 3-2 decision victory. Glazier also moved into the Albert Lea No. 1 all-time wins leader with 185 wins, moving past Logan Kortan who had 182.
Cantu also had a good run to start the tournament, picking up two pinfall wins and a major decision before being defeated in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Cantu notched a 5-2 decision to move on to the third-place match, which he won by a narrow 1-0 decision.
Talamantes won his first match by pinfall, but fell in his second match of the weekend to the consolation bracket. Once there, Talamantes won four straight before falling in the consolation semis and in the fifth-place match, going home with sixth place.
Cole Glazier advanced to the quarterfinals on two decision wins before being sent to the consolation bracket. He would pick up another win in the consolation bracket before losing his final two matches to take eighth place.
The Tigers will be back in dual action Thursday when they host Austin in their first home meet of the season.
