Lake Mills hosted a wrestling meet for the first time this season, and the home team took care of business.

The No. 4-ranked Bulldogs won three duals on the night, beginning with a 60-21 win over Belmond-Klemme. The team collected eight pins in the win.

“We did not wrestle our best in the first dual of the night,” coach Alex Brandenburg said. “The intensity level wasn’t very high, and a lot of technical mistakes were made.”

Lake Mills wrestled much better in the next dual, beating Northwood-Kensett, 67-9. The squad only dropped two bouts the entire dual.

“We looked much better overall in the second dual,” Brandenburg said. “It was nice to get some momentum heading into the final meet.”

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs took on a much-improved West Hancock team, whoich is always very solid in the upper weights and has enough small wrestlers to fill the lower weights this year. The lead changed hands often until the Lake Mills’ lower weights closed the door on the Eagles by winning five of the final six matches. The final score was 46-21.

“West Hancock has a very solid team this year,”  Brandenburg said. “Our kids wrestled well, and it was a good win to cap a solid first half of the season.”

With the three wins, Lake Mills pulls into break with a 15-2 record.

“The team has done a nice job to have this record at break,” Brandenburg said. “Our schedule has not been easy, having beaten six ranked teams and losing to another two.”
