The Albert Lea Salvation Army received more than $47,000 Saturday thanks to a $20,000 anonymous donation, along with donations from businesses and individuals.
Maj. Sandy Hunt said several community businesses combined to donate $20,000, and $7,221 was given at the red kettles. The contributions came after an anonymous donor announced a $20,000 match of all donations given that day.
“We want to thank everyone for their generosity,” Hunt said. “This really will make a difference in the lives of people in the community. It impacts a lot of people.”
The Salvation Army is in the middle of its Christmas fundraising campaign and seeks to raise $193,000.
As of Monday afternoon, about $85,000 had been raised, Hunt said. She encouraged people to continue to support the campaign.
“We don’t want people to say, ‘We don’t need to give anymore.’”
Hunt said the needs in the community seem to increase every year.
“People are struggling to make ends meet,” she said. “Something unexpected happens, and people have to choose between eating, paying the utilities bill, paying rent or paying the extra bills. We are doing our best to help those in our community that need help, and we are only able to do this through the amazing generosity of our community.”
Hunt also encouraged people to volunteer this season to ring bells in the remaining open positions or to volunteer at the organization’s toy distribution Thursday.
Volunteer opportunities are available year-round in the food pantry.
