5 things to do this weekend

1. Albert Lea Hockey Day

In an Albert Lea winter, there are two things you can’t escape: the cold, and hockey. If you’re looking for more of the latter, the 13th annual Albert Lea Hockey Day is your scene. Saturday has a full schedule of games, largely taking place at Albert Lea City Arena. The first game of the morning starts at 9 a.m. at Hayek Park, weather permitting, and the games move indoors at 9:45 a.m. at the arena. The varsity boys’ team plays at 12:30 p.m. against Rochester Century, and varsity girls play the same opponent at 3 p.m. There will be a raffle drawing between the two vasity games.

2. Aebleskiver Sunday

While Trinity Lutheran Church will also serve up eggs, sausage, coffee, juice and milk Sunday morning, the star of the show will be its aebleskivers, or round Danish pancakes. Breakfast is served from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. A free-will donation will go toward the church’s youth fund.

3. Painting class

If it looks too cold to sled Saturday, there’s an indoor option. Debb Peterson will lead a painting class at The Color Wheel, where participants will paint a sledding scene. The class is from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants are asked to pre-register at The Color Wheel.

4. Bingo

Try out your daubing luck at the Albert Lea Moose Lodge Saturday afternoon. Bingo starts at 1 p.m. Proceeds from the event will be donated to hospice.

5. Craft day

Kelly Gau Studio is providing artists from 6- to 14 years old with three ways to get crafty Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Projects — all related to the theme, “Oh Happy Day!” — will be completed in stations, so artists will have plenty of time to create. The event requires an RSVP.
