Lois Holzerland, 1930-2018

Lois Marie Holzerland, 88, of Owatonna died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019, at home at Park Place Senior Living surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 22, 1930, in Milaca, the daughter of  Roy and Elvie (Becklin) Isaacson. She graduated from Milaca High School as the salutatorian of the class of 1948. She continued her education at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

On Sept. 2, 1950, she married Harlan Holzerland at Zion Lutheran Church in Milaca. The couple made their home in Redwood Falls, where Lois worked for JC Penney. In 1956, they moved to New Ulm, where she was a homemaker raising her family. In 1972, a move to Owatonna began her 22-year career at Federated Insurance.

She was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was involved in Bible study and church circle. She also served as the financial secretary and treasurer at Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

Lois faithfully supported her grandchildren, attending all the music and sporting events they were involved in. Another of her passions was square dancing, which she enjoyed for 58 years. She was also involved in volunteer work with Allina Hospital Auxiliary for 18 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Steele County, parking cars at the Steele County Free Fair and as an election judge, and belonged to several bridge clubs. In 2003 Lois was honored to receive the 2003 Senior Citizen of the Year award.

She is survived by her husband, Harlan Holzerland, of Owatonna; children Dee Ann (and Wint) Jones of New Ulm, Carol Wendland of Eagan, Jon (and Mary Kay) Holzerland of Lakeville, Scott (and Katie) Holzerland of Owatonna and Sue (and Greg) Peoples of Owatonna; brother, Dean (and Martha) Isaacson, of Ames, Iowa; sister-in-law, Jeanne Isaacson, of Golden Valley; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Leroy and Elvie; brother, Richard Isaacson; and sister, Mary (and John) Lemke.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Owatonna. The Rev. Greg Schlicker will officiate. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna at a later date.

Memorials are preferred to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or Park Place Assisted Living.
