After being pulled off the roads for five hours overnight, Minnesota Department of Transportation snowplows are back in operation this morning.

According to MnDOT, the plows were brought in to ensure they continue operating effectively in the severe weather. Some of the plows were experiencing mechanical problems in the extreme cold temperatures.

Roads all across southern Minnesota are labeled as partially covered in snow this morning after severe cold temperatures and strong winds swept into the region Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, it was 29 degrees below zero at 7 a.m. in Albert Lea, with a wind chill of minus 54 degrees.

Wind chills are expected to remain in the 45 to 65 below zero range this morning, but should improve to about 35 below zero this afternoon. While winds will become light tonight, occasional breezes will combine with air temperatures around 30 below to produce wind chill values of 40 to 45 below again.

A wind chill warning is in effect through Thursday morning across the area. Dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as five minutes.
