Roundtable meeting scheduled

The Canon Valley Civil War Roundtable will host its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Faribault Senior Center, 19 W. Division St., according to a press release.
Karl Fredrickson of Northfield will be the speaker. He has taught history at Waldorf School in New York for 35 years. He returns to his hometown, retired, as a storyteller, writer and historian.
He will speak on the Minnesota Ninth Infantry fighting in Mississippi in 1864.
In June 1864, while other Minnesota regiments were fighting in Georgia and Virginia, the Ninth Minnesota was marching from Memphis into Mississippi under Brigadier Gen. Samuel Sturgis. The result was the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads, considered a disaster for the Union and a triumph for Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. But was it? And why did it take place at all?
The speaker will address these questions while at the same time looking at the adventures of some of the members of Minnesota Ninth — those who managed to escape, those who were captured and those who went on to fight Forrest again in Tupelo one month later. In the process attendees will see how those little-known battles were of significance for bringing an end to the war the following year.
The public is welcome to attend.
