To collaboration between Glenville-Emmons and Alden-Conger schools.

We applaud Glenville-Emmons and Alden-Conger schools for looking to hire a joint activities director.

With the two schools combining on football, softball, baseball and girls’ basketball, we think it makes sense that the two districts share this position. We also think it shows that both districts are being good stewards of their resources by considering the combined position.

Two finalists are slated to be interviewed March 23, and three will be interviewed March 25.

The finalists were selected from 10 applicants by a committee of Alden-Conger and Glenville-Emmons administrators and coaches.

To the Albert Lea Area Schools Teacher of the Year finalists.

Congratulations to the six teachers announced this week as finalists for the 2018-19 Teacher of the Year for Albert Lea Area Schools.

The finalists are Southwest Middle School music teacher Mary Bissen, Lakeview Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Matt Bitz, Hawthorne Elementary School kindergarten teacher Kris Burnett, Lakeview interventionist Heather Heitman-Alford, Area Learning Center English teacher Paula Olson and Lakeview special education teacher Joie Willner.

We thank these teachers for their dedication to their jobs and for all the other teachers in the district who go above and beyond for their students.

We encourage people to attend the Teacher of the Year ceremony April 3 to find out who is selected for the award.

To discussions starting about how to fill the space left when the Albert Lea Fire Department moves to its new building.

We appreciate that a committee is being set up to evaluate what should go into the space at City Hall vacated by the Albert Lea Fire Department when its new building is completed.

The city is considering moving the Albert Lea Senior Center and expanding Albert Lea Public Library.

Though we think both options have benefits, the largest obstacle for the Senior Center in that location will be lack of parking near the building.

We look forward to hearing about what comes out of the discussion.
