Flood watch continues over area

Melting snow and widespread rain are expected to continue Thursday, leading to possible street flooding and standing water over low-lying areas of southern Minnesota.

The heaviest rain was expected to fall Wednesday evening and again during the day Thursday, bringing in up to another half an inch of rain, according to the National Weather Service.

Because many of the drainage systems are full of ice and snow, any melting or runoff from the rain could lead to ponding.

Freeborn County remains under a flash flood watch through Thursday evening.

The weather agency warned that small streams may rise quickly through Thursday as water is released into the system.

Rain is expected to change over to snow Thursday afternoon over west and south-central Minnesota, though less than 1 inch of snow is expected. The Weather Service warns that strong northwest winds with the falling snow will result in reduced visibilities.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing Friday, so any standing water will become ice.
