ST. PAUL — United South Central wrestlers Blake Legred and Bryce Sonnek started their state tournament bids Friday morning at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Sonnek, a sophomore and ranked No. 10 at 106 pounds, went up against another ranked opponent, No. 7 Cole Holien from Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, in his opening-round match. Sonnek was overmatched by the 21-8 freshman and lost in a 14-0 major decision.

In his wrestleback, Sonnek wrestled a tough match, but ultimately fell in a 4-1 overtime decision when he was unable to escape his Jackson County Central opponent. The loss ends his season with a record of 28-10.

Legred, a senior, lost last year’s championship bout after dominating his way to the finals. He started out this year’s tournament no differently, cruising to a 35-second pinfall over his 138 pound first-round opponent.

The No. 5-ranked Legred moved in to the quarterfinals, where he met No. 2 Shawn Rue of Paynesville Area. Legred controlled most of the match, leading 9-0 after the second period. After escaping a bit of trouble in the third period, he held on to win the match in an 11-4 decision. Legred advances to the semifinals, where he will face No. 4 Tyler Bents of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

While Sonnek’s season comes to a close, Legred looks to continue his quest for a second state title in the championship semifinals, which are scheduled to being at 9:30 a.m. Saturday immediately following the conclusion of the consolation quarterfinals.
