Letter: Column was right

I am an Albert Lea High School student who became inspired to write this letter to the editor after the “My Point of View” column written by Aaron Farris detailing political bias within the high school. I am not a Republican, nor a Democrat. I am an independent who is sick of my teachers telling me how to think, and not providing both sides of an argument.

In Aaron’s column, he talks about a particular teacher who is no longer employed at the high school. When Aaron wrote about the teacher who said that there was something seriously wrong with us if we said that all illegal immigrants should be deported, I knew exactly who he was writing about. I remember being in the classroom with Aaron during this lesson, and remember being terrified of that teacher. I was afraid to express any opinion in that class, let alone a political one. Another teacher gave out multiple homework assignments that were biased against our current president, and didn’t give us any chance to talk about it and argue the point that the article was making. In that class, we were never given both sides, and we when we expressed our opinions, we were told that we didn’t know what we were talking about.

Everything that Aaron wrote about in his column is true, and I witnessed a lot of it. Teachers need to stop forcing their opinions and beliefs on students. It makes everyone feel uncomfortable.
