50 years ago: 1969

• At their third annual banquet, Glen Anderson, Raymond Carey, Ralph Dahl, Herman Myre and Bill Schallock were inducted into the Freeborn County Softball Hall of Fame.

• Tom Tubbs, chairman of the Freeborn County Chapter of the Southern Minnesota Waterfowl Lake Improvement Association, announced the installation of a rough fish barrier at Goose Lake had been completed.

• Bob Veldman’s shot put of 51 feet was the only first-place finish of the day for the Albert Lea track team at the Mohawk Relays in Mason City.

• Harmon Killebrew slammed two home runs and Jim Kaat scattered eight hits in throwing a complete game as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Cleveland Indians 10-3.

 

25 years ago: 1994

• Andy Stockinger threw his Big Nine Conference-leading fourth complete game of the year, but it was not enough as he saw his record go to 4-1 on the season when the Albert Lea boys’ baseball team was defeated by Austin 4-1. With the loss, the Tigers were 6-5 on the year.

• The Albert Lea girls’ track and field team won a triangular with Mankato East and Rochester John Marshall. The Tigers won nine events, led by triple winners Sarah Lindeman, Mollee Ludtke and Laura Halstead.

• The Albert Lea girls’ golf team won a triangular with Faribault and Rochester John Marshall. Christie Strecker shot a season-best 38 to lead the Tigers, with Donna Boom shooting a 41.

 

10 years ago: 2009

• Nine-year-old Oakley Baker from Geneva captured the Elks Hoop Shoot National Championship for the 8- and 9-year-old group in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was the only shooter in the championship round to make every shot.

• The Albert Lea ninth-grade baseball team lost 15-7 to Mankato East. Logan Enderson went 2-3 for the Tigers with a home run and a double.

• The Albert Lea junior varsity boys’ golf team took second place at the Alden-Conger Invitational. Kohl Kriewall shot an 88 to lead the Tigers, with Brady Falk carding an 89.

 

This year

• Carter Dahl, a 2014 graduate of Albert Lea High School and a 2019 graduate of Bethany Lutheran College, was named to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference’s All-Conference team in men’s tennis this spring. He also received the Sportsmanship Award for the Vikings. Dahl finished his collegiate tennis career second all-time in singles wins with 39 and was third all-time in career doubles wins with 29. He is the son of Jerry and Tricia Dahl of Albert Lea.
