Ellendale student recognized
Greta Jacobson of Ellendale was named to the dean’s list at Millikin University for the fall 2018 semester.
Students who attempt 12 graded credits during a fall or spring semester and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher earn dean’s list honors. Students earning a perfect 4 grade point average on 12 graded credits attempted earn high dean’s list honors.
Hamline University releases dean’s list
Ian Olson of Albert Lea was named to the Hamline University College of Liberal Arts dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester.
To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must carry a semester GPA of 3.5 or better and take a full-time class load.
MSU announces dean’s list
Several area students were listed on the fall 2018 dean’s list at Minnesota State University-Mankato.
Among 3,334 students, a total of 875 students qualified for the high honor list by achieving a 4.0 straight A average, while 2,461 students earned a 3.5 to 3.99 average to qualify for the honor list.

To qualify for academic honors, undergraduate students must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours for the semester.
Area students rank among the top 2% at ISU
Riley Arthur of Ellendale, Morgan Fritz of Lake Mills and Cody Haugo of Northwood were ranked among the top 2% of students at Iowa State University.
Local students selected to U of M dean’s list
Ryan Nelson, Brett Peterson, Tyler Shaw and Jonah Walker of Albert Lea; Elynn Johnson and Elena Schewe of Alden; Ahnika Jensen of Clarks Grove; Levi Kermes of Hayward; Alison Pryor of Hollandale; Garrett Johnson of Kiester; and Bethany Koziolek of Wells were named to the 2018 fall semester dean’s list at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must complete 12 or more letter-graded credits while attaining a 3.66 grade point average.
Glenville-Emmons student awarded scholarship
The Helena Acre Mason City branch has announced the recipient of the Helena HomeGrown Scholarship as Mackenzie Hanssen of Glenville-Emmons High School. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
Hanssen will attend South Dakota State University, where she will pursue a degree in animal science.
St. Olaf College announces dean’s list
Jack Buendorf and Jens Lange of Albert Lea and Deanna Shellen of Wells were named to the St. Olaf College dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester. The dean’s list recognizes students with a semester grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4-point scale.
Hayward student recognized
Zoe Neitzell of Hayward was recognized on the Bemidji State University dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester. To be eligible for the dean’s list, BSU students must be enrolled for at least 12 credits and earn a 3.5 GPA during the semester.
Albert Lea student honored
Katelyn Hendrickson of Albert Lea has earned the distinction of being named to the dean’s list for the 2018 fall semester at the College of Saint Benedict. Hendrickson is a senior psychology and communication major at CSB.
To be included on the dean’s list, students must have a semester grade-point average of at least 3.80 and have completed 12 credits for which honor points are awarded.
Lake Mills student participates in fundraising event
Rori Bowman of Lake Mills was one of more than 1,700 current University of Iowa students who recently collaborated to raise almost $3 million in financial support for the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital as participants in the 25th annual UI Dance Marathon.
During the event Feb. 1-2 at Iowa Memorial Union, student participants unveiled the total of $2,960,403.25, which supports pediatric oncology patients and their families at the hospital and advances cancer research.
In addition to raising money, the event celebrates the lives of survivors and recognizes those lost.
Dance Marathon is the UI’s largest student organization. It has raised almost $28 million since its first event in 1995.
South Central College releases honors lists
South Central College released its dean’s list and president’s list of students for the spring and fall semesters of 2018.
Dean’s list honorees for the spring 2018 semester include Gracelyn Andersen of Albert Lea, Corey Ehlert of Bricelyn, Paris Pestinger of Easton, Matthew Young of New Richland and Thomas Allis, Jeremy Groskreutz and Taylor Schultz of Wells.
President’s list honorees for the spring 2018 semester include Jeremy Haugh of Easton and Jeremy Groskreutz of Wells.
Dean’s list honorees for the fall 2018 semester include Gracelyn Andersen of Albert Lea and Kiara Newman, Annie Schroeder and Andrew Schultz of Wells.
President’s list honorees for the fall 2018 semester include Frank Dann of Bricelyn and Mark Schmitz of Wells.
The dean’s list includes students who have achieved a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher and completed at least 12 credits that semester. The president’s list includes students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher and have completed at least 24 cumulative credits at SCC.
Geneva student installed in honor society
Anna Bailey of Geneva was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Bailey is pursuing a degree in social work at University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
Bailey is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.
Local graduates earn degrees
Western Governors University, an online, nonprofit university, recently hosted graduation events for students across the country. Among those graduating were Christina Wunschel of Albert Lea, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing; Elizabeth Schafer of Albert Lea, who received a Master of Science degree in nursing education; Jacqui Richter of Alden, who received a Master of Science degree in curriculum and instruction; and Elizabeth Schultz of Hartland, who earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing.
Lake Mills student selected as Cyclone aide
Morgan Fritz has been selected to serve as a 2019 Cyclone aide for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University. Fritz is a political science major from Lake Mills.
Cyclone Aides, a program coordinated by Iowa State University’s Office of New Student Programs, are undergraduate student leaders employed to assist with orientation and Destination Iowa State throughout the year.
The student leaders provide new students with an introduction to campus and its resources, provide campus tours, serve on information panels and share information about Iowa State with new students and their family members.
SDSU releases fall graduate list
South Dakota State University has released the names of those who graduated following the fall 2018 semester. Area students include Grady Ruble and Riley Ruble of Albert Lea; Nicolas Bartness and Spencer Wangen of Ellendale; Melissa Malakowsky of Hartland; and Allyssa Drescher of Wells.
Area students receive degrees from MSU-Mankato
Minnesota State University-Mankato awarded 2,304 degrees at the end of the spring 2019 semester, with approximately 1,700 students participating in three graduation ceremonies on campus May 11 in Taylor Center’s Bresnan Arena.

Alden student receives degree from UNL
Jessica Lynn Price of Alden was among a record 3,428 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during commencement exercises May 3-4.
Price earned a Bachelor of Science in education and human sciences.
