Two inmates in the Freeborn County jail are facing charges for allegedly assaulting two correctional officers last month in the jail.

Avarso Umare Mumad, 27, of Minneapolis and Ibrahim Abdi, 30, of Moorhead each face one count of fourth-degree assault of a correctional employee.

Court documents state the correctional officers were attempting to lock down the general population in the jail when the assaults took place.

Court documents state another inmate was reportedly not following commands for lockdown, and one of the officers sprayed pepper spray to deter the other inmates. As he sprayed, he was allegedly attacked by Mumad and was punched in the face multiple times, according to court records.

As a second officer was assisting the hurt officer, Abdi reportedly began punching him multiple times on the right side of his head and ear.

Footage of the assaults were caught on surveillance cameras.

The officer who was reportedly assaulted by Mumad said he believed the incident had been planned, as Mumad found out in court the day before that he was going to be deported.  The officer said once a deportee is charged, it prolongs the deportation process until the local charge is cleared, court documents state.

The two men are next slated to appear in court Aug. 22.
