NORTHWOOD — A car show, a cemetery walk, inflatables and live entertainment are just a few of the items on Northwood’s agenda when it celebrates its 16th annual Founders Day on Sept. 7.

The day will start out with an omelet breakfast at the Masonic Temple, which will be served by the Northwood Lions Club.

Whether attendees prefer to get around on two legs or four wheels, they’ll have something to do at 8 a.m. when registration for the Tailgate 5k and the Aristocrats Car Show begin. Registration for the 5k will be at the Central Park shelter house while the car show registration will be on Central Avenue.

“We had 140 cars last year,” said Founders Day co-chairwoman Teresa George-Zenz. “So we have a pretty good turn out.”

Runners can register for the Tailgate 5k in advanced by calling 641-324-1802. Those who call before race day will be eligible for a free T-shirt with their $20 registration fee, which can be mailed to Jolene Cotter, who co-organizes the event, at 861 Central Ave., Northwood, IA 50459. Checks should be written to Tailgate 5k.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Ryan Weisert Scholarship Fund. Weisert, a 2006 Northwood-Kensett graduate, was killed in a car accident in 2012. According to Weisert’s mother, Wendy Weisert, in the seven years since her son’s passing, seven scholarships have been given to those entering a building trade, such as carpentry. Weisert himself had benefited from a similar scholarship when he graduated.

A number of events will begin at 9 a.m., including a sand volleyball tournament, class reunions for the classes of 1958, 1959 and 1960, street vendors and the opening of the Iowa History 101 trailer, which is on loan from the Iowa State Historical Society.

Joe Fierova is organizing the Founders Day volleyball tournament at Swensrud Park. He said 10 six-person teams will be accepted for the tournament, which will feature round-robin play first, followed by a double-elimination tournament. The $60 entry fee can be paid at the event and all the money will be given back to the players in the form of prizes. To register, text Fierova at 641-390-0423.

A cemetery walk, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Sunset Rest Cemetery, will feature re-enactors portraying the lives of Jack McMullen, Richard Estes and Addison Hinman. The event will be presented by the Northwood Historical Preservation Commision.

The Stromstein building will host an open house from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It’s been in dire straits for many years,” George-Zenz said of the building. “The historical society finally took it over and now it’s being restored.”

The main museum will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Split Second will provide live entertainment on the Show Mobile stage.

There will be a few food vendors on Center Street and some of the local restaurants will be opening throughout the day. The Founders Day Committee will also sell Norwegian goodies. The proceeds from the sales will help defray the cost of the Founders Day events.
