The Lake Mills volleyball team had a solid tournament outing Saturday at defending Top of Iowa Conference champion Forest City.

Although the Bulldogs did not get their chance at the Indians, they went 4-1 on the day — only falling to a tough Clarion-Goldfield/Dows team.

In the first matchup of the day, Lake Mills dominated Clear Lake 21-11, 21-10. It was the second match of the day when they met the Cowgirls of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows and lost 21-12, 21-14.

“Against Clarion we were too tentative with the ball and it cost us a chance to compete,” said head coach Jim Boehmer. “We had some moments, but didn’t have the aggressive level of play to trade points with them.”

After the loss, the Bulldogs came back in a big way beating Webster City (21-18, 21-19), Roland Story (21-14, 23-21) and Algona (21-18, 21-7).

“As the day went on we started to focus on what we could do better as an individual to fit into the team concept and we may have learned some things about ourselves,” Boehmer said. “We have been working hard to be more aggressive in all aspects of our game. It is a daily focus in practice and it is paying off. We have had a few wake-up calls and we spent some time talking this week about what we need to do mentally. Our skill level is fine our mental game has to improve and (Saturday), we showed what we can be.”

Several Bulldogs put up big numbers in multiple stat categories throughout the tournament. Sophomore Kylie Greenfield totaled 36 kills and 23 digs through the five matches. Senior Jessa Gasteiger came away with 77 assists and 26 digs and senior Megan Groe recorded 25 kills and eight digs.

As a team, the Bulldogs were 95% from the service line and totaled 15 aces. Senior Olivia Moen was a perfect 42/42 from the line.

The Bulldogs move to 17-4 overall this season and 5-0 in conference play. They will be back on the court Tuesday when Boehmer will try for his 850th career win against North Union at home.
