Letter: Hayek will not be the same next year

The Albert Lea baseball program and the Albert Lea Baseball Boosters want to offer their condolences to the family and friends of Davis “Dave” Gilbertson while also remembering the contributions he made to the program. “Gilby” was the voice of the Tigers for the last decade. Game after game, Gilby was there to help bring Hayek Field alive. Through cold days and rain delays, his voice over the PA was constant, and his only payment came in a new hat, pre-game hot dogs and the appreciation of those of us in the program who came to rely on his presence in the press box. Gilby’s commitment to Albert Lea baseball shows the power of sports to bring together multiple generations and weave together our community. The selfless spirit of individuals like Gilby is one of the things that makes our community so special. Come this spring, we know that Hayek will not sound the same, but Gilby’s presence will continue to be felt and our program will forever be thankful for his support and passion.
With our deepest condolences,
Sean Gaston
