Elenora Carey, 1927-2019

A memorial gathering for Elenora “Nora” Carey, 92, of Albert Lea will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. There will be a private family graveside service and interment at Graceland Cemetery. Chaplain Todd Walsh will officiate. Online condolences are welcome at www.bayviewfuneral.com.

Nora died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019, at Thorne Crest Senior Living Community in Albert Lea.

Elenora Ione Carey was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Ireton, Iowa, to Elmer and Sylvia (McCormick) DeRaad. She grew up in Hollandale and attended school in Hollandale and Albert Lea.

On Jan. 13, 1948, Nora was united in marriage to Leo Carey in Albert Lea. In 1950, the couple moved to West St. Paul, where she worked as an accounting clerk and taught drivers ed through the state of Minnesota. Nora was very proud of her job as a driving instructor. In 1980 they returned to Albert Lea.

Together, Nora and Leo loved to travel, especially being snowbirds and spending winters in a warmer climate.

Nora also loved music and she played the steel guitar and organ.

Survivors include her daughters Judy Carey of Washington and Ellen (Larry) Niebur of Clear Lake; granddaughter, Carrie (Eric) Eisnaugle, of Orlando, Florida; grandson, Keith (Sara) Niebur, of Bettendorf, Iowa; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Shirley Stundahl.

Nora was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; parents Elmer and Sylvia; sisters Marilyn Abbe, Lillian Snider, Starlene Anderson, Helen Waltz and Gloria Vinge; and brothers Delbert and Merril DeRaad.
