Albert Lea competes in 5 duals over the weekend

The Albert Lea wrestling team had a big stretch of duals over the weekend, competing at a quadrangular in New Ulm on Friday night and hosting a triangular Saturday.

Wrestling five duals in two days, the Tigers came out 3-2 overall, going undefeated Saturday at home.

Starting Friday night, Albert Lea faced the task of taking on some tough opponents in New Ulm and Class 1A-ranked teams No. 5 Tracy and No. 6 Blue Earth Area.

Against Tracy, Albert Lea picked up five wins in the 14 bouts, losing 45-22. Junior Caleb Talamantes got a win at 160 pounds with a 10-6 decision win. Sophomores Carter Miller and Cameron Davis were winners at 132 pounds and 138 pounds, respectively. Miller won via an 8-2 decision and Davis won with a fall in the first period. Freshman Cole Glazier and Aivin Wasmoen also notched wins for Albert Lea. Wasmoen won at 106 pounds in a 15-5 major decision and Glazier won at 145 pounds after a second-period pinfall.

There was not much difference in the dual against Blue Earth Area, losing 52-25. Albert Lea again won five matches, four of which came from the same wrestlers.

Wasmoen won at 106 pounds via a late fall, Davis won at 132 pounds in an 11-4 decision, Glazier won at 145 pounds in a second-period fall and Talamantes won at 152 pounds with a 12-4 major decision. The only new wrestler to pick up a win was sophomore Carsen Knutson at 113 pounds with a 21-second pinfall.

Albert Lea got its first dual win of the night in its final dual against New Ulm, 42-39.

The Tigers capitalized on a shorthanded Eagles roster, winning three matches by forfeit and secured the win with a big victory from sophomore Kadin Indrelie.

Glazier, Talamantes and sophomore Henry Eggum were the wrestlers who picked up forfeit wins. Wasmoen won another match by fall at 106 pounds. Davis and Miller also got pinfall victories at 132 pounds and 138 pounds, respectively.

The big win of the dual came at 182 pounds, when Indrelie won in a first-period fall to secure the win for Albert Lea.

Heading into Saturday, Albert Lea was looking to bounce back from a tough night Friday.

The Tigers did just that, going 2-0 on the day with a tight win over Minneota and a crushing victory over St. Charles.

Albert Lea picked up eight wins in the dual against Minneota, winning in a close battle, 36-29. Talamantes and sophomore Adam Semple got wins via forfeit at 170 and 195 pounds, respectively. Sophomore Mason Drescher was the only Tiger to pick up a pinfall win in the dual, getting the fall in the second period of his match at 145 pounds. Wasmoen, Davis and Eggum all came away with major decision wins at their respective weights and Glazier and Indrelie both won in narrow decisions.

In its final dual of the weekend, Albert Lea showed its dominance with a 60-18 defeat of St. Charles. Eggum, Talamantes, Indrelie, juniors Tucker Ericksmoen and Tyler Barney and sophomore Caleb Banks all won via forfeit. Glazier and seventh grader Nick Korman both won by pinfall’ Wasmoen won by a 26-9 tech fall and senior Bradley Prestegard won in a 3-1 decision.

Albert Lea wrestled Rochester Mayo on the road Monday night. Final scores and results from that dual will be in Wednesday’s edition of the Tribune.

Pending the results of Monday’s dual, the Tigers are now 9-7 in dual action on the season. Thursday they head to Northfield to take on the Raiders in the regular season finale.
