More new COVID-19 cases reported in area counties

Confirmed COVID-19 cases have increased in all area counties, according to Minnesota Department of Health data released Wednesday.

The state health department states Steele County saw the largest jump with four new cases, increasing its total to 29. Mower County increased by two cases, increasing its total to 35, and Freeborn, Faribault and Waseca counties increased by one case each, putting their totals at 38, 8 and 7 respectively.

The Freeborn County Public Health Department stated the county’s new case was a person in their 50s. As of today, 24 of Freeborn County’s cases had recovered and are out of isolation.

Statewide, total positive cases grew to 8,579, an increase in 728 cases. Of the total cases, 5,005 people have recovered and no longer need isolation, and 485 people have died, an increase in 30 from the previous day. Of the total deaths, 391 resided in long-term care or assisted living facilities.

The Minnesota Department of Health stated 443 people are hospitalized as of today, including 180 in intensive care.

The median age of hospitalized cases is 61, though ages have ranged from an infant less than 1 month old to a person 102 years of age. The median age of the people who have died is 83, though ages have ranged from 30 to 109. 

The state department said people ages 30 to 39 represent 19% of all lab-confirmed positive cases. People 70 or older and people ages 20 to 29 years represent the next highest groups at 17% each. People ages 70 and older have accounted for 82% of the deaths.

The highest number of overall cases have been reported in Hennepin County, with 2,764 cases and 325 deaths. Counties with the next highest numbers are in Nobles County with 1,082 and Stearns County with 975.

Ramsey County has had 656 cases, 38 of whom have died, and Olmsted County has had 322 cases, eight of whom have died.

The department stated 93,232 tests have been completed, including 13,738 through the Minnesota Department of Health’s public health lab and 79,494 through external laboratories.
