Albert Lea girls’ basketball competes in weekend tournament

The Albert Lea girls varsity team traveled to Eyota for the Early Bird Tournament Friday and Saturday night. Although the team ended up with two losses, the team saw some new players on the court for the first varsity experience.
The team is led by captains Nevaeh Wacholz, Kayla Johnson and Erin Boorsma. New to varsity seeing playing time and scoring their first varsity points were sophomore Halee Godeke and freshman Alijah Heidemann.
On Friday the team lost to Dover-Eyota 31 to 66; however, after shaking off the nerves the nearly tied in the second half, scoring 18 to Dover -Eyota’s 19.
The team was led in scoring by Wacholz with a double double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Saturday night also started out slow for the Tigers against Houston with half time score of only 12-33, but the Tigers came out strong in the second half outscoring their opponent 35-28.
The team was led in rebounds by senior Erin Boorsma with 6. Scoring led by Wacholz with 23 and steals led by both Wacholz and Heidemann with four each.
The Tigers will take on a conference opponent for the first home game on Dec. 1 against Mayo. JV will play at 6 p.m. and varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.
