In likely the premier dual match in the state of Iowa Thursday night, No. 6 Lake Mills defeated No. 3 Nashua-Plainfield.

The win for the Bulldogs was huge, as it will play a large role in the dual rankings and regional dual hosting sights.

The team got off to a hot start, picking up a huge upset and pin over a returning state qualifier in the first match.

It snowballed from there, as Lake Mills won several other key toss-up matches.

A big lead was built throughout, and although N-P won several bouts late, Lake Mills prevailed 46-30.

“This was a huge win for our kids,” said coach Alex Brandenburg. “They rebounded well after wrestling poorly the first meet of the season.”

Although Lake Mills had an impressive winning streak against the traditional power before, Nashua-Plainfield had really taken it to the Bulldogs the past two seasons.

“It was exciting to beat a team that had really pounded us the past two years, and one who is no slouch this year with eight returning qualifiers,” Brandenburg said. “Tonight’s atmosphere felt similar to that of the teams that placed in top five at state duals for five straight years.”

With this win, Lake Mills will set it sights on another top five finish come February. In other action, the team picked up wins over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 50-22 and Newman 78-0.

Individually, wrestlers who finished the night 3-0 were Lucas Oldenkamp, Royce Peterson, Hayden Helgeson, Landon Price, Steve Brandenburg and Wyatt Hanna.
