Administrator’s Corner by Marie Adams

Dear Hawthorne community,

Marie Adams

In today’s digital age, it is crucial to find a balance between screen time and real-world experiences for our children. As the principal of Hawthorne Elementary, I am dedicated to promoting a healthy environment that nurtures screen-free development and encourages our youth to explore the world around them.

Benefits of screen-free development

Limiting screen time can have numerous benefits for children, including improved social skills, better concentration, increased physical activity and enhanced creativity. By reducing the time spent in front of screens, we can open up a world of opportunities for our children to engage with their surroundings and develop essential life skills.

Opportunities for exploration

There are countless ways for our youth to feel connected to the world and cultivate a sense of curiosity and wonder. Encouraging activities such as outdoor play, nature walks, art projects, science experiments, reading and community involvement can spark a child’s imagination and instill a love for learning.

Tips for caregivers

  • Establish screen-free zones and times at home to encourage alternative activities.
  • Provide access to books, puzzles, art supplies and outdoor toys to inspire creativity.
  • Plan family outings to parks, museums, libraries and other enriching locations.
  • Encourage open-ended play that allows children to use their imagination and problem-solving skills.
  • Model healthy screen habits by limiting your own screen time and engaging in activities with your child.

Get involved

I invite our school community to join hands in supporting our children’s development by embracing screen-free initiatives and promoting exploration and discovery. Together, we can create a nurturing environment where our youth feel connected to the world and eager to learn.

Let’s empower our children to put down the screens, look up and explore the wonders that surround them. Together, we can shape a future generation that is curious, engaged and ready to make a positive impact on the world.
