Ethel Thisted

Ethel Jean (Flugum) Thisted, a beloved member of the Albert Lea community, passed away on April 27, 2024, at the age of 100. She was born on February 20, 1924, in Albert Lea Minnesota to Alfred and Nora (Bergeson) Flugum.

Ethel dedicated her life to caring for others, starting her journey at Naeve Hospital School of Nursing and earning her Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Her passion and commitment led her to a successful career as a registered nurse, working at various hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout her lifetime.

After graduating from Albert Lea High School in 1942, Ethel married her first husband, Raleigh Henschel, and together they had a son, Paul. Over the years, she was also married to Richard McFarland and Leslie Thisted. Ethel was a devoted member of the Sons of Norway, serving in leadership roles and actively contributing to her community.

Known for her skills in crafting, Ethel enjoyed knitting, tatting, crocheting, and spending time with her family. Her great grandchildren affectionately called her “Grandma Great,” a title she held with pride and love. Ethel’s winters were spent in Texas, where she embraced the sun and warmth, always looking forward to the change of scenery.

Ethel loved Jesus and spent time studying the bible. She was a dedicated member of Lunder Lutheran Church. She loved to spread the word of Jesus’ love.

Ethel’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will forever be cherished by her surviving son, Paul (Cathy) Henschel; grandson, Andrew (Jennifer) Henschel; granddaughter, Mindy (Adam) Koelsch; great-grandchildren, Andrew Henschel Jr., Alex Henschel, Justin Henschel, Elizabeth Koelsch, Lexi Koelsch, Hailey Koelsch; and many nieces and nephews.

Ethel is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Nora (Bergeson) Flugum; spouses, Raleigh Henschel, Richard McFarland, Leslie Thisted; brothers, Howard (Eileen) Flugum, Gerald (Mildred) Flugum; sisters, Alida (Merle) White, Ilo (Charles) Long; and great-granddaughter, Chloe Henschel.

Ethel’s family would like to thank the staff of St. John’s Nursing home for their devoted care of her.

A funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Bonnerup Funeral & Cremation Services in Albert Lea, MN at 11:00 am, with a visitation at one hour prior; Ethel’s nephew, Chad Dahlke, will be officiating. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery will occur after a reception at the funeral home.
