Small-town festivals kick off this weekend with Morin Lake Days

Morin Lake Days in Alden will kick off the summer of area festivals with events planned for Friday through Sunday this year.

Events start Friday with a medallion hunt and the annual Wes Hintz Fishing Contest, along with a classic car club roll-in, BBQ dinner and s’mores on the shores, among other events.

On Saturday, the day starts with breakfast at Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Morin Lake Days fun-run with various other events taking place throughout the day, ending with the parade, featuring grand marshal Neil Pierce, a street dance and fireworks.

On Sunday, the weekend wraps up with a community worship service on the south of Morin Lake landing and fire department water games. A Battle of the Bars will take place at Oakview Golf Course.

The following is the full schedule:

Friday

  • Noon: Medallion hunt begins (clues posted at City Hall)
  • 1:30 to 3 p.m.: Wes Hintz Kids Fishing Contest at Morin Lake
  • 3 p.m.: Free children’s activities and games
  • 3:30 to 7 p.m.: Maple Valley Classic Car Club Roll-in
  • 4 p.m.: Lions ring toss fundraiser
  • 4 to 7:30 p.m.: Fundraiser BBQ dinner by the lake for the Alden-Conger Music Department
  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.: RAD Zoo on Water Street
  • 7 p.m.: Kiddie tractor pull on Water Street
  • 7 to 8:30 p.m.: S’mores on the Shores near the beach

Saturday

  • 8 a.m. to noon: Breakfast at Redeemer Lutheran Church
  • 7:45 a.m.: Registration opens for Morin Lake Days Fun Run (Hemmingsen’s Transfer parking lot) with 10K and 5K runs starting at 8 a.m., 1-mile walk/run starts at 9 a.m., MLD Fun Run Ribbons and Awards at 9:30 a.m.
  • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Flea market on Broadway
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Alden Community Museum open for self-guided tours
  • 2 to 5 p.m.: Free canoes and activities on Morin Lake
  • 4 p.m.: Lions ring toss fundraiser
  • 5 p.m.: Free kiddie parade (Summer Olympics theme) on Water Street; registration at 4:30 p.m.
  • 5 p.m.: Pie and ice cream social at city hall
  • 5:15 p.m.: Freeborn Saxophone Quintet at the beach
  • 7 p.m.: Parade (backup rain date June 16)
  • 8 p.m. to midnight: Street dance by the lake
  • 10 p.m.: Fireworks (backup rain date June 16)

Sunday

  • 10 a.m.: Worship by the Water, Morin Lake; Boy Scouts serving doughnuts and beverages after the service
  • Noon: Alden Fire Department water games
  • Noon to 3 p.m.: Free canoes available to use
