Hats off to the leaders of Albert Lea Fire Rescue, who teamed up with a nonprofit called Care Resource Connection to bring a new pilot program to Albert Lea.
The program is aimed at reducing secondary 911 calls and connecting residents with resources to help them avoid regular trips to the emergency room.
After someone calls 911 and is taken to the hospital, firefighters, who are also trained EMTs, will follow up with the resident and ask if they would like a consultation to help them figure out resources to help them in their daily living to prevent future repeat visits to the emergency room. Resources might include things such as a physical therapist, physician or even something like installing grab bars to help someone be more stable in their home.
What makes it even better is that the city’s partner, Care Resource Connection, found sponsors for the program, so there is no cost for the taxpayers.
Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Laskowske said in the Albert Lea City Council meeting on Monday that longtime Albert Lea Fire Capt. Bart Berven will oversee the program and will switch into an administrative role running this program and the minimum housing program.
Laskowske said the goal was to start with the nursing homes and assisted living facilities and branch out from there.
This program will be valuable in helping set residents up for success and stay in their homes longer. In return, it will hopefully reduce things like falls and other hazards that lead to the emergency room.
