Anyone driving into Albert Lea is soon going to know the city has been designated as a Yellow Ribbon Community.

The Albert Lea City Council on Monday approved the purchase of five “Yellow Ribbon City” signs that will be installed at various entrances into the city.

The signs are 30 by 18 inches and are about $63 each.

Four will be posted by population signs: on East Main Street by the Knights Inn, on Minnesota Highway 13 by Sundance Lane, on U.S. Highway 69 by West Ninth Street and on U.S. Highway 65 by Betha Larson Lane.

A fifth sign will be installed on Bridge Avenue by Plaza Street.

Albert Lea was officially named a Yellow Ribbon Community at a ceremony in August with Gov. Mark Dayton present.

A Yellow Ribbon Community is one that has a delegated action plan in place to support and take action to help service members and their families.

Several businesses have recently come forward saying they will offer discounts to military families, and other fundraisers and events are in the works.
