Halverson thanks community for tremendous support

Kindergartners in Mrs. Prihoda’s class at Halverson School called themselves “Prihoda’s Penguins,” but they did much more than waddle during the school’s first-ever walk-a-thon. They raised money for field trips, enjoyed face painting and playing at Frank Hall Park and ate healthy snacks throughout the day. -- Submitted photos
Halverson Elementary School’s first-ever walk-a-thon Oct. 19 was a roaring success, with virtually all students and staff participating, along with more than 50 parents volunteering. The event raised $11,500 for field trips, family events at the school, special curriculum tools and much more.
Fifth-graders from Halverson Elementary School and their teachers — all wearing Albert Lea Tiger jerseys — roared all the way to Frank Hall Park and back during the school’s first-ever walk-a-thon. The walk-a-thon raised $11,500 for field trips, family events at Halverson and special curriculum tools.
The school’s parent-teach organization, SPIRIT, organized the event to continue “Blue Zones” efforts at Halverson, which started several initiatives last year to increase healthy choices for Halverson students.
SPIRIT thanks all students, families, staff and donors for their tremendous support. The following businesses provided classroom sponsorships or supplies for the event: AgPower Enterprises, Alliance Benefit Group, Ernie’s Canvas Products, John Sorlie Insurance, McDonald’s on Main Street, Minnesota Corrugated Box, Mrs. Gerry’s, PC Doctor, Produce State Bank and Rofshus Precision Machine.
Contributions made by Dawson Limousine amd Pizza Ranch made it possible for the two classrooms with the highest pledge amounts to enjoy a ride around Albert Lea and lunch out as a reward for the students’ hard work raising money.
SPIRIT also thanks the Albert Lea Tribune for their coverage, along with KAAL TV and KIMT TV. The students were very excited to see themselves on the front page of the newspaper and on television.
