Vivian Martha Engel, 88, Ellendale

The funeral service for Vivian Martha Engel of Ellendale will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at the United Methodist Church, Ellendale. The Rev. David Brown III will officiate. Interment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, S.D. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Bonnerup Funeral Home, Ellendale, and one hour before services at the church.

Vivian died on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at her son Ward’s home in White Bear Lake, Minn. She was 88 years old.

Vivian was born Nov. 2l, 1913, in Marion, S.D., to Daniel and Ethel Heintz. She had six brothers: Edward, Ervin, Wilmar, Woodrow, Kenneth and Harold; and two sisters: Phyllis and Beverly. She married Orlin Lester Engel on Aug. 7, 1947, at Harrold, S.D.. They lived in Harrold, S.D., Aberdeen, S.D., Greeley, Colo., Bath, S.D., Plankinton, S.D., Mitchell, S.D., Klamath Falls, Ore., Hurley, S.D., Huntley, Minn., and in Ellendale for the last 33 years.

Vivian served in the United States Army from September 1943 until the war’s end in 1945. She was stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and Luzon. She was a member of Naomi Circle, United Methodist Women, and had been involved in service groups at her church. She was happiest when with her family and her many friends.

Vivian is survived by three sons: Dr. William Engel and his wife Ursula of Bloomington, Minn., Ward Engel and his wife Donna of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Steven Engel and his wife Terri of Ellendale; and one son-in-law, Jack Conley of Las Vegas, Nev. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth Heintz of Custer, S.D.; and two sisters: Phyllis Shaefer of Spokane, Wash., and Beverly Venekamp of Rapid City, S.D.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, and one daughter, Beverly Conley of Las Vegas, Nev.
