NORTHFIELD — All in all, it was a pretty good day for the United South Central girls’ cross country team at the Class A girls’ state cross country meet in St. Olaf Saturday.

Emily Mantor, a junior, and Hannah Goemann, a senior, each earned All-State honors by finishing in the top 25.

Mantor moved into fourth place early on and stayed there for the entire race as she finished with a time of 14 minutes, 39.5 seconds.

“I trained hard and did a lot of running to get here,” Mantor said. “It was a good feeling down the stretch. It was really nice today and it just felt good.”

According to Rebels’ coach Kent Viesselman, Mantor was rated among the top 5 Class A girls in Minnesota all season long.

“Emily had an outstanding season,” Viesselman said. “She competed in 11 meets this season and won eight of them. There were only four girls in the state who beat her at any time during the season; the three-time state champion from Class AA and the top three finishers in Class A at the state meet.”

Goemann finished in 24th place with a time of 15:27.3.

“Hannah has been a varsity starter for six years,” Viesselman said. “After her ACL injury last January she worked very very hard to get back to her previous level this fall to give USC one of the best 1-2 punches in the state. Saturday, she executed the race plan to perfection.”

According to Viesselman, in her six years on varsity, Goemann has been All-Conference five times, All-Section four times and All-State twice.

“I was, and am, very proud of her,” Viesselman said. “Last week was really difficult for me as a coach knowing Saturday would be her last cross country race for USC. She’s a special part of the program.

Clare Flanagan of The Blake School won the Class A meet with a time of 14:04.1.
