BURNSVILLE — A Burnsville man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a friend on New Year’s Eve has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Twenty-three-year-old Kyle Alan Dague pleaded guilty in October to second-degree manslaughter.

He was accused of killing 22-year-old Justin Schauer. Dague initially told investigators Schauer shot himself, but tests indicated Dague pulled the trigger. Several witnesses also said Dague acknowledged firing the gun.

Dague has been in custody since July. With good behavior he could be out of prison in two years and eight months.

Judge Martha Simonett said she expected Dague to argue for a shorter sentence Friday. But his attorney said Dague wanted to accept the full sentence to show remorse and to give Schauer’s family closure.
