A Freeborn County District Court judge this week ordered a high-risk sex offender from Albert Lea be committed to a civil institution.

Matthew Alan Radke, 37, will be committed to the Minnesota sex offender program in St. Peter and Moose Lake after being found to be a “sexually dangerous person,” according to an order from Freeborn County Judge Steve Schwab. He will be there for an undetermined amount of time.

Radke was classified as a Level 3 sex offender in April 2012 by the Minnesota Department of Corrections. A Level 3 offender has the highest likelihood of reoffending.

He hasn’t been residing in Freeborn County of late. He has been held at the state prison in St. Cloud pending the results of the commitment hearing.

Radke previously was convicted of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a young child over a six-year period and fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct of a woman in 2007. He was convicted in January 2012 of window peeping.

The petition for Radke’s commitment was filed by the Freeborn County Attorney’s Office in April 2012, a few days before Radke was scheduled to be released from prison to live in Albert Lea.

In a prior hearing, Schwab said he believed there was a serious risk Radke would do physical harm to himself or others if he was released.

There is currently one Level 3 sex offender living in the city.

There are no Level 3 offenders out of the Albert Lea city limits in Freeborn County.

Tai Lars Stadheim, 43, has been living in Albert Lea since he was released from prison in April 2010. He has a history of sexual contact with juvenile female victims, including fondling. He was known to his victims.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections states his registered address is on the 2100 block of East Main Street.
