50 years ago – 1961

• The Albert Lea High School wrestling team won their third straight Region 1 title. Advancing to state were John Ingebritson at 95 pounds, Pete Fabry at 103 pounds, Roger Christianson at 112 pounds, Tom McKey at 154 pounds and Jeff Brooke at heavyweight.

• Glenville defeated Alden 72-64 in District 2 West basketball. Doug Cipra scored 27 points and Glen Jensen 14 for Glenville. Alden was led by Don Brummer with 21 points and Albert Allen with 17. Freeborn also advanced with an 87-65 win over Blooming Prairie. Gabby Pierce scored 36 points for Freeborn and Dave Tonolli 21 for BP.

• In their last regular season game ALHS defeated St. Paul Murray 75-51. The Tigers were led by Lowell Syverson with 22 points and Paul Wilke with 17.

25 years ago – 1986

• In the District 2A basketball tournament Ellendale-Geneva defeated Lyle 60-39 to advance to the semifinal round. E-G defeated NewRichland-Hartland 63-59. Chris Clausen scored 23 points, Brian Bedney and Jeff Kasper 16 each for E-G. NR-H was led by Eric Strenge with 27 and Brian Mendenhall with 13. Also in the semifinal round Freeborn defeated Southland 56-50. Chris McKean scored 25 points for Freeborn.

• Mike Petersen scored 32 points and Tim Struck 14 for the ALHS boys’ basketball in their 65-62 victory over Northfield. The Tigers finished the rgular season with a record of 12-7.

10 years ago – 2001

• Results in the first two rounds of the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament. Class AAA (ALHS wrestlers): Alan Attig at 140 pounds lost 5-3 in the first round; Wyatt Reyerson at 152 pounds won by pin in the first round and lost 7-1 in the second round. Class A: Tony Schlaak of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva at 160 pounds won 3-1 in the first round and won 7-5 in the second round; Jon Niebuhr of United South Central at 125 pounds won 8-3 in the first round and lost in the second round.

• The ALHS boys’ basketball team defeated Mankato West 62-47 in their final regular season game. Chris Rebelein scored 19 for the Tigers.
