Joy Carleton Hendrikson Jr., 85, of rural Northwood, died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, Stacyville, Iowa.

Funeral services for Joy will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle with the Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Burial will take place in the London-Deer Creek Cemetery rural Northwood. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion of Lyle.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Hwy. 65 South, Northwood. The family also will greet friends and family one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joy was born in Austin on June 7, 1928, the only child, to Joy and Kittie (Kjersti Sola) Hendrikson, Sr. Joy was baptized on June 24, 1928, at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church and was confirmed there on Sept. 13, 1942. He spent his life living in Deer Creek Township attending eight years of school in Otranto, Iowa. He graduated from high school in Lyle in 1946.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1955 where he attended Army Lab School and served in Tokyo, Japan, with the United Nations blood bank. After returning from Japan, he started farming and was assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Unit in Mankato. He received his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army Reserves after eight years of service.

On July 3, 1956, Joy married Leila Cottrell at the First Lutheran Church in Glenville. Joy farmed his entire life and especially enjoyed feeding cattle. He was employed at Fieldstone in Northwood for a few years where he truly enjoyed his co-workers. He also was the Worth County weed commissioner and did some crop insurance adjusting.

He was a board member of the London State Bank in London for 21 years. He was also on the Oakland Farmers’ Elevator board for many years. He has been a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle for more than 45 years serving in many capacities including president for six years. He was a charter member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association. His greatest joy was spending time with all six grandchildren and attending their many sports and music activities.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Leila; daughter, Margaret (Paul) Pederson of Carpenter, Iowa; son, James (Shelley) Hendrikson of Lyle; grandchildren, Nathan (Leann) Pederson of Polk City, Iowa; Kjersti (Adam) Mayer of St. Ansgar, Iowa; Sam Pederson of Carpenter, Martha Hendrikson of Grafton, Iowa, Dallas Hendrikson of Somerset, N.J., and Maaike Hendrikson of Somerset. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Kellan Mayer; one sister-in-law, Inez Cottrell; three nephews, Jack, Mike and Pat Cottrell; and numerous Hendrikson and Sola cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law; and brother-in-law, Earl Cottrell.
