Brownsdale Police Chief Jason Mindrup, who has been on administrative leave during a Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigation, has been charged with criminal sexual conduct.

Mindrup, 42, of Waltham, faces felony charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct — penetration, and third-degree criminal sexual conduct — force or coercion.

A woman accused Mindrup of sexually assaulting her early on Aug. 31 after leaving a bar in Waltham. According to the court complaint, the victim said she left the bar with another man but instead got in Mindrup’s truck because he was concerned for her welfare. The woman added Mindrup then drove east of town, stopped, undressed and forcefully had sex with her. Mindrup allegedly drove the woman back to the bar, which was closed. A bartender let the woman into the building, the complaint added.

An investigator interviewed the bartender, who said the woman returned to the bar as she had left her phone and purse. The bartender added the woman was crying and looked scared but wouldn’t say what happened. The complaint added Mindrup spoke with the bartender to see if the woman needed a ride home.

An investigator interviewed Mindrup on Sept. 10. Mindrup also said the woman left the bar with another man, according to the court complaint. Mindrup added he offered the woman a ride home as he was concerned for her. However, Mindrup said the woman wanted to go to his home, so he declined, decided where to take her and drove her back to the bar, as her purse and phone were there, the complaint stated.

The Brownsdale City Council will discuss the matter during a closed session at an upcoming City Council meeting, said Mayor Dave Pike.

In the meantime, a temporary hire, Tom Brogan, has been on patrol nearly full time in Brownsdale, Pike added.

Mindrup has a court appearance scheduled for later this month in Mower County.
