50 years ago – 1963

• The Albert Lea Rangers of the Southern Minnesota Amateur Hockey League defeated Austin 16-10 in their first game of the season. John Gray had four goals and Ray Sorenson three for the Rangers.

• The Albert Lea basketball team defeated Minneapolis South 69-56. The Tigers were led by Jim Bratvold and Paul Nervig with 16 points, Tom Olson, 14, and Gary Plante, 10.

• Terry Kunze scored 24 points, Lou Hudson, 20, and Don Yates, 14, for the Minnesota Gophers in their 89-77 victory against Cornell.

25 years ago – 1988

• Quarterback Wade Wilson completed 17 of 28 passing attempts for 253 yards with no interceptions for the Minnesota Vikings in their 28-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the National Football League wild-card game. Joey Browner had two interceptions for the Vikings.

• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team evened its season record to 3-3 after defeating St. Peter 67-64 at the New Prague Holiday Tournament. Max Jeffrey scored 17 points and Jason Willner, 15, for the Tigers.

• Joyce Schultz scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds for the Wells-Easton girls’ basketball team’s 55-47 win over Truman.

• The Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball team raised its season record to 5-2 with a 93-69 win over Detroit. The Gophers were led by Willie Burton and Ray Gaffney with 18 points each, Melvin Newbern, 14, and Kevin Lynch, 13.

10 years ago – 2003

• Ben Woodside with 24 points, Stephan Thorn, 12, and Ryan Moore, 11, led the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team to a 66-50 victory over Rochester Century. The Tigers were 4-1 overall.

• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team shut out Windom 4-0. Jon Breuer scored two goals, Brett Frydenlund and Ben Meillier one each. Evan Long was in goal for the Tigers.

• Beth Yokiel scored 19 points, had 12 rebounds and four blocked shots for United South Central in their 43-36 win over Bethlehem Academy.

• The New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva girls’ basketball team improved to 6-0 for the year with a 65-29 win over Randolph. Traci Nelson scored 14 points, Alison Anderson and Emily Hagen, 11 each, for NRHEG.
