Policy on knives needs revision

I feel compelled to write regarding the pocket knife issue at United South Central. Although I don’t know either the young lady at the center of this or her family, the hysterical, one-size-fits-all, knee-jerk reaction by the school’s faculty appalls me. The superintendent should be the one in front of an expulsion board.

Granted, times have changed since I was in school in the 1970s. Back then, you could borrow a pocket knife from almost anyone (teachers included) without even having to go to a locker to get it. Come on, people, it wasn’t an armed insurrection.

Or, on the other hand, maybe better play it safe. Remove all of the table knives and forks from the cafeteria and replace them with plastic sporks.

Seriously, though, if school policy has turned this incident into an issue for expulsion, then school policy is in dire need of revision.
