Minnesota women fall against Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Tyler Scaife scored a season-high 28 points, on 12-of-21 shooting, to lead No. 25 Rutgers women past No. 21 Minnesota 66-61 on Saturday night.

After Betnijah Laney missed the front end of a one-and-one, Minnesota’s Mikayla Bailey hit a 3 on the other end to pull within 64-61 with 16 seconds left. But Briyona Canty hit a streaking Kahleah Copper with a full-court pass for a layup to seal the win.

Scaife scored 13 during a 25-2 run that gave Rutgers (14-5, 5-3 Big 10) its biggest lead, 25-5, midway through the first half.

Amanda Zahui B. led Minnesota (16-4, 5-3) back into the game, scoring 20 of her career-high 36 before halftime and pulling the Golden Gophers within six, 37-31, at the break.

An 8-0 run by Minnesota made it 58-54 with less than two minutes remaining.

Laney scored 15 and Copper added 13 for Rutgers.

Zahui B. finished with 15 rebounds, Carlie Wagner scored 12 and Shayne Mullaney had 11 assists for Minnesota.
