50 years ago: 1965

• In Border League high school basketball, Freeborn defeated Bricelyn 72-46. The Vikings were led by Dick McKean with 18 points and Rick Bishop and Chuck Hinkley with 15 points each. Arwin Flo scored 23 points for Bricelyn.

• Wells High School defeated Montgomery 62-55 in double overtime. Jeff Miller had 17 points, and Larry Sonnek 15 for the Wildcats.

• Duane Nelson scored 15 points, Mike Spurr and Rick Loven 11 points each and Darrel Paulson 10 for Ellendale High School in its 67-60 basketball victory over Adams.

• Glenville defeated the Waseca Aggies basketball team 65-45. Ron Rasmussen scored 12 points, and Ken Cafourek and Dick Grinolds 10 points each for Glenville.

25 years ago: 1990

• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team raised its Big Nine Conference record to 7-2-1 after defeating Owatonna 2-1. Tom Keating and Todd Williamschen scored goals for the Tigers. Tigers goalie John Nelson had 24 saves.

• The Albert Lea boys’ swimming team defeated Rochester Mayo 91-78. First-place winners for the Tigers were Chris Schmitz in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle, Tim Hovde in the 100 breaststroke, Mike Evans in the 100 backstroke and the 200 medley relay team of Nate Saul. Charlie Colby, Evans and Hovde.

• The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team fell to Mankato East 64-48. Pam Stoltz of the Tigers led all scorers with 26 points.

10 years ago: 2005

• The Aragon Vets won the title in the Albert Lea Men’s Lower Volleyball League. Team members were Bruce Wolfgram, Paul Larson, Gerry Gehling, Van Munson, Jeremy Griffith, Christian Peters, Jim Kortz, Rick Schultz and Doug Griffith.

• Joe Woelfel scored 12 points for Lake Mills in its 40-37 basketball win over West Hancock. The Bulldogs’ season record was 12-2 and their North Iowa Conference mark was 6-2.

• The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team, behind four goals by Laura Hillman, defeated Faribault 6-1. The Tigers’ Big Nine Conference record was 9-6-1, and their season mark was 13-11-1.
