50 years ago: 1965

• The Cabin Bar won the Albert Lea Women’s Softball League title after defeating Michaels House of Beauty 9-8 to finish the season with a 9-1 record. Joann Pederson had two hits for Cabin Bar.

• In the State Line League amateur baseball playoff semifinals, Hayward defeated Glenville 12-4. Jim Lair was the winning pitcher and also hit a home run. Gary Skaar had four hits for Hayward. Glen Houg had three doubles for Glenville. In the other semifinal game, Freeborn defeated Emmons 3-2 in 11 innings. Chuck Hinkley picked up the win for Freeborn.

25 years ago: 1990

• Mrs. Gerry’s 14-year-old traveling baseball team defeated Glenville 12-10. Pete Breitholtz was the winning pitcher. Cazzi Walchoz had three hits, and Josh Heilman and Matt Trygstad two hits each for Mrs. Gerry’s.

• The Albert Lea Colonels baseball team defeated Granite Falls 10-6. Joe Sczublewski was the winning pitcher. Vern Frydenlund had three hits, including a three-run homer, and Brad Tullberg also hit a home run.

• Domino’s 12-and-under baseball team won its first game in the Goodhue Tournament over Rochester 5-2 with David Qual the winning pitcher. Ryan Wangen had three RBIs for Domino’s. Brett Damerow drove in the winning run for Domino’s in its 3-2 victory in the second-round game against Rolling Stone Rock. Domino’s was defeated in its third game and eliminated.

 

10 years ago: 2005

• The Green Lea Club Tournament was at Green Lea Golf Course. Men’s division winners were Chris Baas, championship flight — his sixth time winning the championship flight; Scott Rasmussen, first flight; Brad Williamson, second flight; Mark Sather, third flight; Larry Runden, fourth flight; Ken Pederson, fifth flight; Bill Neff, sixth flight. Women’s division winners were Annie Olson, champion; Kirsten Davis, first flight; Jan Briggs, second flight.

• The Albert Lea Elks U14 boys’ soccer team defeated Detroit Lakes 4-2 in the in the first game at the Minnesota state tournament. Scoring goals for the Elks team were Tyler Prihoda, Adam Clark, Jairo Campos and Adam Kermes. Albert Lea lost its second game 4-1 to Hopkins. Levi Herrera scored for the Elks.
